Our History at Clowes And Son
Established in 1875, C. R. Clowes And Son stands as a testament to the rich history of Victorian pharmacy practice. Nestled in the heart of Buxton, within the picturesque borough of the High Peak, our establishment resonates with the charm of a bygone era.
The original pharmacy operated from two locations in Buxton since 1848, reflecting the town's prominence as a spa destination. Today, our current location has proudly served the community for over 150 years.
The walls of our historic pharmacy are adorned with exquisite Victorian fittings that captivate visitors—vintage bottles and colourful carboys display the artistry of an era dedicated to health and wellness. Many of the original pharmacy ledgers still grace our bookshelves, chronicling the meticulous records of past prescriptions and the dedication of those who served before us.
Throughout the decades, C. R. Clowes And Son has remained a family business, passing through the hands of several generations. Notably, J.J.E. Pugh was among the early proprietors, ensuring that the establishment thrived during a period of rapid change in the pharmaceutical sector. In the 1940s, the business was taken over by ourselves the Clowes family, marking the beginning of a new chapter that would see the continuation of traditional pharmacy practices in the modern era.
Key to our legacy are the original instruments of the trade—pill makers, scales, and other apothecary tools that reflect our commitment to maintaining the integrity of traditional methods while serving the evolving needs of our clientele. These artefacts serve not only as functional tools but as symbols of our enduring commitment to quality and personal care.
As we continue to serve the spa town of Buxton, we invite you to explore our storied tradition, where history, innovation, and care converge to provide an unparalleled pharmaceutical experience.
